Zinc PCA

Zinc salt that reduces sebum and bacterial growth in acne.

Also known as: Zinc pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, Zinc PCA, INCI: Zinc PCA

What it is
Zinc PCA is a zinc salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA), a naturally occurring amino acid derivative. It's a water-soluble compound that delivers bioavailable zinc to the skin.
What it does
Zinc PCA reduces sebum production, inhibits *Cutibacterium acnes* (formerly *Propionibacterium acnes*) growth, and has mild astringent and antimicrobial properties. It helps normalize oil secretion and supports the skin barrier, making it particularly useful for oily and acne-prone skin.
The evidence
Moderate evidence supports zinc's role in acne management; multiple studies show zinc reduces sebum and bacterial colonization. Clinical trials on zinc PCA specifically are limited, but the ingredient is well-established in acne formulations and supported by broader zinc research.
Best for
Oily, acne-prone, and congestion-prone skin; particularly effective for mild to moderate inflammatory acne.
Pairs well with
Niacinamide, salicylic acid, azelaic acid, and other sebum-regulating or antimicrobial actives. Works well in lightweight, oil-free formulas.
Use cautiously with
No major conflicts; however, avoid excessive zinc dosing (>40 mg/day systemically) and use cautiously with other heavy-metal chelators or high-dose iron supplements.
Cautions
Generally well-tolerated topically; rare sensitization possible. Not a substitute for oral antibiotics or prescription acne treatments in severe cases.
