Antioxidants

Vitamin E

Fat-soluble antioxidant that protects skin from oxidative damage.

Also known as: Tocopherol, tocopheryl acetate, mixed tocopherols, alpha-tocopherol, INCI: Tocopherol.

What it is
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that exists in several forms (alpha, beta, gamma, delta tocopherols). In skincare, it's typically used as alpha-tocopherol or tocopheryl acetate, which stabilizes the ingredient and extends shelf life.
What it does
Vitamin E neutralizes free radicals and reactive oxygen species that damage skin cells, collagen, and lipids. It protects against UV-induced oxidative stress and environmental pollutants, helping to prevent premature aging, maintain skin barrier integrity, and reduce inflammation. It also has mild moisturizing properties due to its occlusive nature.
The evidence
Strong clinical evidence supports its antioxidant and photoprotective effects, particularly when combined with vitamin C or sunscreen. Multiple studies confirm it reduces UV-induced damage and supports skin barrier function; however, evidence for standalone anti-aging claims is moderate.
Best for
All skin types, especially mature, sun-exposed, or environmentally stressed skin; beneficial for sensitive and barrier-compromised skin.
Pairs well with
Vitamin C, ferulic acid, sunscreen, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide.
Use cautiously with
No major conflicts. May be less stable in very high-pH formulations; avoid excessive heat during formulation.
Cautions
Tocopheryl acetate must be converted to free tocopherol by skin enzymes to be active; some individuals may experience mild irritation at high concentrations (>5%), though this is rare. Generally safe during pregnancy.
