PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

Autologous growth-factor concentrate that stimulates collagen and tissue repair.

Also known as: Platelet-Rich Plasma, autologous platelet concentrate, PRP serum, same name.

What it is
PRP is a concentrated preparation of a patient's own blood plasma, enriched with platelets and growth factors (PDGF, VEGF, FGF, TGF-β). It is obtained by centrifuging whole blood to separate and concentrate the platelet fraction, then reinjecting or topically applying it to stimulate tissue regeneration.
What it does
Platelets release bioactive proteins that trigger fibroblast activation, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation). This accelerates wound healing, improves skin texture and firmness, and can reduce fine lines and scars. Effects develop gradually over weeks to months as new collagen is laid down.
The evidence
Moderate to strong evidence for efficacy in skin rejuvenation and scar improvement; most robust data exist for microneedling + PRP and hair-loss applications. Quality and growth-factor concentration vary widely between preparation methods, limiting standardization and reproducibility of results.
Best for
Aging skin, fine lines, loss of firmness, atrophic scars, and hair thinning; particularly effective when combined with microneedling or other collagen-induction therapies.
Pairs well with
Microneedling, radiofrequency, laser resurfacing, and other collagen-induction treatments; also used alongside stem cells or exosomes in advanced protocols.
Use cautiously with
Anticoagulants (warfarin, DOACs) and high-dose NSAIDs may reduce platelet function and efficacy; avoid in active infection or uncontrolled bleeding disorders.
Cautions
Results are patient-dependent and variable; requires venipuncture and processing; risk of infection if sterile technique is breached; pregnancy and lactation are relative contraindications; not FDA-cleared as a drug (off-label use in most aesthetic applications).
