Retinoids

Bakuchiol

Plant-derived retinol alternative with retinoid-like benefits, no irritation.

Also known as: Babchi extract, Psoralea corylifolia extract, meroterpene; INCI: Bakuchiol.

What it is
Bakuchiol is a meroterpene compound derived from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia (babchi plant), native to South Asia. It structurally mimics retinol's effects but does not bind to retinoid receptors, making it a non-retinoid alternative.
What it does
Bakuchiol stimulates collagen and elastin production, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and improves skin texture and firmness through retinoid-like signaling pathways. It also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to calm irritation and even out skin tone. Unlike retinoids, it does not increase photosensitivity or cause peeling.
The evidence
Moderate clinical evidence supports bakuchiol's anti-aging and skin-smoothing effects; several peer-reviewed studies show efficacy comparable to retinol at 0.5% concentration for reducing fine lines and improving firmness over 12 weeks. Evidence for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity is emerging but less robust than for retinoids.
Best for
Sensitive skin, retinoid-intolerant patients, and those seeking anti-aging without irritation or downtime; also suitable for pregnancy and nursing when retinoids are contraindicated.
Pairs well with
Niacinamide, peptides, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and other gentle actives; works well in layered routines without competing for receptor sites.
Use cautiously with
No major conflicts; however, combining with prescription retinoids is unnecessary and may dilute efficacy messaging. Use caution if also using strong exfoliants (AHAs/BHAs) in the same step.
Cautions
Generally well-tolerated with minimal irritation; rare photosensitivity reported. Safe in pregnancy and nursing (unlike retinoids), but patch-test first. Not a replacement for prescription retinoids in severe photoaging or acne.
General information, not medical advice. Ingredient effects vary by formulation, concentration, and skin. Patch-test new actives and consult a qualified provider before starting prescription ingredients.
